Stuart Davis: Art and Theory, 1920-31 Details
Reviews
This book has all the color reproductions needed to study Davis's work. "the Mellow Pad" is the cover of the book . His pad series is his most important work to my mind. Davis had no use for the subjective work/'content' / of the Abstract Expressionists. He believed in a formal art that could be understood by the masses of people.Gorky and Davis split when Arshile understood that Stuart was interested in the ordinary guy. He said he had no use for "poor art for poor people" This book has the nitty gritty on Stuart Davis. A must book on American Art theory.
