Language Notes Text: English (translation) Original Language: Spanish Read more From the Back Cover This new book brings together for the first time a collection of photographs taken on two separate visits to Mexico - the first in 1934, just as the young twenty-seven-year-old was embarking on his photographic career, and the second some thirty years later. The dramatic images, preceded by a thought-provoking commentary from Carlos Fuentes, record with brutal accuracy the panorama of everyday life - an execution wall; crowded markets; stark, dusty landscapes; children playing in alleys - a unique record of a country and its people that includes some of the most famous and powerful photographic images of the century. Read more About the Author The author of more than a dozen novels and story collections, Carlos Fuentes is Mexico's most celebrated novelist and critic. He has received numerous honors and awards throughout his lifetime, including the Miguel de Cervantes Prize and the Latin Literary Prize. Included among his books are Terra Nostra, Where the Air Is Clear, and Distant Relations. Read more

Reviews

Cartier Bresson was a master of people pictures. This book represents his work in two distinct epochs…the Mid-Thirties…and the Mid-Fifties.There are some gems in both series. Unfortunately the photographs are not dated and the pages are not numbered, so figuring out which photos match which epoch is a bit of a photographic puzzle. Most photographers worth their Summicron will be able to tell by the resolution and contrast of the later and more advanced lenses. The artwork is excellent though out. In reality, the finished prints were very modest in size, smaller than 8"x10" in most cases.
